Update on campus demonstrations

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Public Affairs

As today’s labor action on campus by AFSCME patient-care workers and their supporters wraps up, we encourage members of the campus community to keep checking for updates starting early Wednesday on continuing demonstrations and how they might be affecting campus operations.

Updates on specific campus operations such as dining and library services can be found at ucsc.edu/advisory. We also will share major status updates via CruzAlert and through our 459-INFO phone line.

Today’s demonstrations were peaceful for both demonstrators and those entering and exiting campus, and we appreciate your continued patience. We urge all to drive carefully and allow extra travel time in the event there’s congestion on roads around campus.

A reminder that campus shuttles will not be running through the duration of the labor action, though Disability Van Service is available by calling 831-459-2829. Santa Cruz Metro buses also will not come onto campus during the protests. Metro is providing modified service, using bus stops on Bay Street near the main entrance or on High Street near Western Drive.

Faculty should communicate via email with students to discuss contingency plans, should campus access be limited. Additionally, staff members should remain in contact with supervisors and managers to discuss their schedules and work locations.

In the event a campus employee feels threatened, harassed, or intimidated for crossing a picket line, or if you are prevented from working by picketers or striking employees, notify your supervisor immediately. In cases of emergency, please dial 9-1-1.
