Campus fire safety

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Nader Oweis, Chief of Police

Firefighters yesterday extinguished a small wildfire in upper campus, near the Pogonip. Fortunately, their quick response prevented the fire from growing beyond an acre.

This incident—as well as the deadly wildfires we’ve seen throughout California this summer—serve as a reminder that we all need to do our part to prevent wildfires. Anyone who smells smoke or sees a fire must immediately dial 911.

The danger to our campus is real. The threat of fire on or adjacent to our campus is serious and potentially devastating; current dry conditions have created an explosive environment.
