Fire personnel from the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and CAL FIRE are planning to conduct a 14-acre prescribed burn near the observation platform at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park on Thursday June 14 with an alternate date of June 15.
Visitors to this area may notice fire and smoke related to the burn. There is no cause for alarm. Specific burn areas are near the observation platform within the state park.
This burn is part of a long-term strategy at the state park to reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire and to maintain rare ponderosa pine sandhills habitat, according to CAL FIRE. This rare habitat type relies on fire to maintain a healthy ecosystem and regenerate sensitive species.
