Jody Greene, professor of literature, feminist studies, and history of consciousness, and director of the Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (CITL), has been appointed associate vice provost for teaching and learning within the Academic Affairs Division. This appointment is through June 2019.
As part of a restructuring within Academic Affairs, Greene will continue as CITL director, while also taking on roles with faculty development and student learning assessment. Many of the tasks involved are aligned with the work of the CITL, which has blossomed in its first full year of operation and now provides resources to faculty and graduate students seeking to improve student learning through their work as instructors or teaching assistants.
Greene’s efficiency and efficacy in building the CITL make her an ideal leader for this next phase. Some of Greene’s new work will involve helping instructors better understand how to measure student learning, which allows instructors to experiment with new teaching techniques and gauge their effectiveness. Greene will also be supporting research-driven, campus-tailored approaches to sustaining a culture of excellence in teaching and learning at UC Santa Cruz.
The restructuring was triggered by the upcoming departure of Associate Vice Provost Martin Berger, who is leaving to be dean of faculty and vice president of academic affairs for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has ably led the Strategic Academic Planning process, and the campus is grateful for the work he has done in multiple administrative roles.
Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Herbie Lee will oversee the finalization of the Strategic Academic Plan, as well as its implementation in 2018–19.
