Annual training exercise for active shooter, June 18 to 22

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Nader Oweis, Chief of Police

Similar to prior years, a training exercise sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Police Department will be held from June 18 to 22 at the Theater Arts Center and Baskin Visual Arts complex. This training is expected to begin at about 8 a.m. each day, last throughout the day, and end at 6 p.m.

The training is designed to prepare the UC Santa Cruz Police Department, local allied law enforcement agencies, and local fire agencies on how to respond together to an active shooter incident using the latest tactics and equipment available.

As such, some areas around the Baskin Visual Arts and Theater Arts complexes and adjacent parking lots will be cordoned off by yellow tape and signs, and will be off-limits to anyone not participating in the training exercises. A section of Kerr Road will also be closed from the Performing Arts Lot past the Media Theater. The Performing Arts lot will be open for parking.  In addition, those near the area may hear sounds of screaming, simulated gun fire, simulated explosions, and other noises as part of the training.

In addition, we still have a few volunteer opportunities available.  Volunteers allow us to create real life scenarios, thereby enhancing the training experience for all involved.  Anyone interested in volunteering may contact Jason Moore at 831-502-7377 or can send him an email at pdvolunteers@ucsc.edu.
