Strike update—Classes starting prior to noon canceled; do not come to main campus

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Chancellor George Blumenthal

With both entrances of the main campus blocked by strike activity, I have decided to cancel classes scheduled at the main campus and Coastal Science Campus starting before noon today, except for:

  • Classes held entirely online.
  • Classes in which the instructor has made alternate arrangements.

Instructors are encouraged to communicate directly with their students to let them know whether classes are proceeding with alternate arrangements or whether class is cancelled. Students are encouraged to look for emails from their instructors with guidance for their courses. Instructors and students should reach out to the Disability Resource Center for support and assistance with accessibility needs.

Additionally, faculty, students, and staff should not come to main campus, given that access is significantly impacted at this time. Staff members should check in with supervisors and managers to discuss their schedules and alternate work locations.

Our operations continue as scheduled at other sites.

I will send an email update at 10 a.m. as to whether classes will be held later today and whether the main campus is accessible.

I understand the disruption this causes to our mission, especially in the midst of our spring quarter. Union leaders rejected, without conducting a vote among their members, UC’s proposal, and chose to strike.

I truly appreciate your patience during this time. More information about the strike and the status of campus services can be found online at ucsc.edu/advisory.
