It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of Joel Kubby, professor of electrical engineering and former chair of the department. Joel passed away in the early morning hours of April 18, 2018.
Joel earned a B.A. in physics from UC Berkeley in 1980 and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Cornell University in 1985. His research interests included micro-electro-mechanical systems and adaptive optics. He made significant contributions to the field of biological imaging by using adaptive optics techniques originally developed for astronomy.
Joel joined the Baskin School of Engineering during the 2004-05 academic year as a faculty member in the Electrical Engineering Department. He brought many qualities to the department: a creative approach to research, a passion for teaching and mentoring, and a keen sense of how to leverage technology for positive societal impact. His pioneering work in the field of adaptive optical microscopy for biological imaging is a perfect example of the creative and inspired research in which Joel engaged.
In 2012, Joel became chair of the EE department, a position he held for five years. During this period, Joel worked tirelessly to shape and expand the department, playing a key role in advocating for and hiring five new faculty members. Joel will be sorely missed by his students and colleagues.
The Baskin School of Engineering and the Electrical Engineering Department will host a celebration of Joel’s life on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the La Feliz Room at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Please RSVP online.
