Leadership change in the Graduate Division

It is with mixed feelings that I share news that Dean of Graduate Studies Tyrus Miller has accepted a position with UC Irvine to serve as dean of its School of Humanities. His appointment is effective July 1, 2018.

A professor of literature who joined the campus in 1999, Tyrus has served the campus in many capacities—as co-provost of Cowell College and beginning in 2009, as vice provost and dean of Graduate Studies.

Under his leadership, the campus has enhanced its graduate programs and increased graduate enrollment to over 10 percent of our total enrollment. With the support of faculty and administrative leadership across the campus, he has helped to increased the number of advanced degrees offered by UC Santa Cruz.

I’m saddened to see him leave UC Santa Cruz, but we’ll look forward to watching his continued leadership at our sister campus.

I will soon consult with campus constituents, including Senate leadership, deans, vice provosts, and Tyrus, on a transition plan for a new dean of Graduate Studies.
