Following a nationwide search, UC Santa Cruz has hired Susan Harriman to serve as the director of athletics and the Office of Physical Education, Recreation, and Sports.
Harriman, Bates College's assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator, will start Jan. 15.
Vice Chancellor Sarah Latham said Harriman and her leadership team will focus on organizational strength, strategic planning, and fundraising in the year to come.
"Sue understands the unique and transformational mission of a D-III program and the needs of student-athletes," Latham said. "She also understands the critical role that club sports, physical education, intramurals, recreation, and wellness programs play in the life of our campus community and the mission of UC Santa Cruz."
Harriman first joined Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine, in 2003. Her tenure there included working with alumni and parent engagement and fundraising. She has served as assistant director of athletics since 2013.
“I am honored to assume the responsibility of directing the department of athletics and the Office of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports,” Harriman said. “Also, I am very excited to collaborate with the entire Banana Slug community as we work towards future successes for our entire student body.”
Latham thanked Greg Warzecka for serving as interim director since summer, as well as the search committee for its hard work.
