George Bunch, associate professor of education at UC Santa Cruz, is the winner of the 2017 Second Language Research Special Interest Group Midcareer Award.
The award is scheduled to be presented when the Special Language Research Special Interest Group holds its meeting in San Antonio in a couple of weeks.
The award recognizes scholars who have developed research on second language pedagogy and instruction. The association reviewers were impressed by Bunch’s publication record, specifically his single-authored manuscripts in some of the most renowned journals in the world.
“Dr. Bunch has an impressive record and a clear research program trajectory from K-12 English learners to community college learners. I think his work on community college ELL students, a population that is understudied, has made significant contribution to the field. His impact extends to not only teachers, students, and teacher educators, but also policy,” said a reviewer, in a letter to Bunch.
The American Educational Research Association (AERA) was founded in 1916, and uses the research provided by scholars like Bunch to improve education for all.
Bunch received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, his masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of Maryland, and his Ph.D. in education from Stanford.
