Women's soccer headed to NCAA championship

Women's soccer

The UC Santa Cruz women’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division III championships, joining 63 other teams.

The Banana Slugs will play Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at Burns Stadium in Claremont.

The Banana Slugs were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions, as well as members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The women’s soccer team was qualified after beating Mills College 10–0 on Saturday.

UCSC went 6–10–1 on the year, but was 5–4 against Division III institutions, better than any other independent. The Banana Slugs’ tough schedule this year included five Division II opponents.

The team will have a rematch against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. The Slugs fell 3–0 at the Sagehens in the second game of the season. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps takes on NWC champion Pacific Lutheran in the other half of the West Coast subregional.

The soccer team competed in the championships last year.
