Fire in the Cave Gulch area
Shortly after noon, Cal Fire officials said a fire that began early Wednesday sending smoke over campus was in the Cave Gulch area on State Park property off Empire Grade. Fire crews had encircled the fire and would be in the process of extinguishing it and were expected to be on the scene at least overnight.
Cal Fire said the fire began in a homeless encampment in a stand of redwoods and burned between 1 1/2 and two acres. There was no threat to campus but odor from smoke continued to be apparent throughout the morning.
Overnight and this morning a strong smell of smoke was apparent on campus, particularly on the west side.
This morning, Cal Fire has located the source of the smoke as a small grass and brush fire on Wilder Ranch State Park off of Empire Grade, adjacent to the West Entrance. Fire crews are on the scene and extinguishing the fire. At this time there is no risk to the campus.
