The horrific attack in Orlando has sent waves of shock and grief across the country. Like everyone, I grieve the loss of life and am thinking today about the family and friends of the victims. The campus flag flies at half-staff as a tribute to the victims.
This violence targeted members of the LGBTQ community in a place of celebration, a place that should have been a safe space. This hate-filled act compels us to recommit to building a strong, unified, supportive community—one in which everyone enjoys the safety and freedom to be themselves.

UC Santa Cruz is not immune to hate- and bias-related incidents. Embracing our differences and supporting each other takes effort, but it's worth it. It's the path to the world we want to live in. I hope you'll join me on the journey.
