In Memoriam: Larry Merkley

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Mary Doyle, vice chancellor, Information Technology

I am very saddened to let you know that former ITS Vice Provost Larry Merkley died yesterday afternoon after suffering from a major brain aneurysm.

We are not yet aware of plans for a memorial but will convey that information when it becomes available.

Larry retired from UC Santa cruz in 2008 after serving as vice provost beginning in February 2003 and as a consultant to the campus for two years before that. Larry received his MBA from Brigham Young University in 1969. From 1969 to 1981, he held positions as manager and consultant in mostly private sector organizations providing support and direction in areas of institutional investment management, economic, analysis and corporate planning.

From 1981 to 2000, he served on the faculty of management at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, where he was an associate professor of information systems. There, he held a number of positions as a faculty administrator, including associate dean of the faculty of management, and associate vice-president of administration.

Please join me in extending our deepest condolences to Larry's family, many friends, and former colleagues on campus.
