Campus again ranks No. 1 among Peace Corps’ top volunteer-producing Hispanic-serving institutions

UC Santa Cruz tied with San Diego State University for top spot in the Peace Corps’ 2016 rankings of the top volunteer-producing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in the United States.

Thirty-two alumni are serving in the Peace Corps. More than 800 UC Santa Cruz alumni have traveled abroad to serve as volunteers with the Peace Corps, which was founded four years before the campus opened in 1965.

California is home to 10 of the 15 HSIs in this year’s rankings. The state produces more Peace Corps volunteers than any other state nationwide. More than 29,400 California residents have served overseas as Peace Corps volunteers.

Top-ranking HSIs in California produced 154 Peace Corps volunteers this year, with ranked University of California schools producing 52 volunteers and ranked California State University schools producing 59 volunteers.

For 13 straight years, UCSC has placed within the top 25 in the Peace Corps’ ranking of large universities for alumni participation. The Peace Corps sends Americans abroad to tackle the most pressing needs of people around the world. Volunteers work at the grassroots level to develop sustainable solutions that address challenges in education, health, economic development, agriculture, environment and youth development.

10. California State University, Northridge (9 currently serving volunteers)
10. Texas State University (9 currently serving volunteers)
12. University of Texas at El Paso (8 currently serving volunteers)
13. California State University, Fresno (7 currently serving volunteers)
13. California State University, San Bernardino (7 currently serving volunteers)
13. New Mexico State University (7 currently serving volunteers)
