The Cowell and Stevenson coffee shops play an important role in our college communities and are valued institutions for generations of alumni. At no point were they going to close. In fact, UC Santa Cruz Dining and Housing is poised to reinvest in the facilities to make sure they continue to be places where students, faculty, and staff can study, chat, debate, and relax.
Both coffee shops have been operating at deficits, absorbed by the two colleges, for many years. Transferring operation from the colleges to Dining Services will allow the coffee shops to take advantage of the purchasing power of the larger Dining Services operation, as well as other operational efficiencies such as inventory tracking.
UCSC Dining will manage the coffee shops beginning this summer and will do so in a way that preserves the look and feel we have all come to enjoy with both places.
