Power outage early a.m. July 22

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Jean Marie Scott, Associate Vice Chancellor Risk & Safety Services

On behalf of Physical Plant and the Office of Emergency Services, I am providing this update and advisory.

Last night there were two power outages (one from approximately 12 a.m. to 2 a.m. and a second from 3:15 a.m. to 4 a.m.) that impacted the whole campus except for Family Student Housing and Lower Campus.  Consistent with campus emergency preparedness, emergency power systems provided support for mission critical functions.

Physical Plant has reviewed the cause of these outages and made corrections to the new turbine plant to resolve the issue that caused the outage.  While they are confident that a similar event will not likely occur, other situations causing power outages can be expected from time-to-time.  When power outages occur, campus phones that rely on power may not work.  If an emergency event is happening at the same time as a power failure, cell phones should be used to call 911 for emergency response. 911 should not be used for general questions about power outages.

We apologize for any inconvenience that resulted from the power outage.  For questions about the power failure, contact Mike Hanson (9-2581); for questions about the 911 system, contact UC Police Dispatch (9-2231).
