Tuesday, June 2 is opening day for the UC Santa Cruz Farm & Garden's market cart at the corner of Bay and High streets at the base of the UC Santa Cruz campus. The cart will be open Tuesdays and Fridays from 12 noon – 6 p.m., featuring fresh, organic produce and flowers grown at the campus Farm & Garden.
Opening day shoppers will find a spring selection of colorful crops, including organically grown strawberries, blueberries, salad mix, and romaine, along with bok choy, arugula, and Meyer lemons. Spring flower bouquets will also be available.
As the growing season progresses, shoppers can look forward to broccoli, potatoes, sweet and hot peppers, apples, pears, sweet corn, tomatoes, basil, summer and winter squash, and much more.
All the produce is organically grown at the UCSC Farm and Alan Chadwick Garden by staff and students in the Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture, an organic farmer and gardener training program of UCSC’s Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS). Proceeds from sales support the Apprenticeship program, now in its 48th year.
The market cart will be open through the end of October (weather permitting). Shares are also available in the UCSC Farm’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program for the 2015 season.
