Community Bulletin: Wildfire near north campus

To: UCSC Community

From: Nader Oweis, UC Santa Cruz Chief of Police

At daybreak today, a wildfire was reported on State Park lands near Chinquapin and Empire Grade roads outside the boundaries of north campus, moving toward Highway 9. There appear to have been multiple fires of suspicious origin. Cal Fire and City of Santa Cruz fire crews responded.

This is the second wildfire on or near campus in four days. The threat of fire on our campus is serious and potentially devastating; current dry conditions have created an explosive environment.

Report all fires, smoke, or smell of smoke immediately by calling 9-1-1.

Section 4421 of the Public Resources Code states that no person shall set fire or cause fire to be set to any forest, brush, or other flammable material which is on any land that is not his own, or under his legal control, without the permission of the owner, lessee, or agent of the owner or lessee of the land.
