Renewal of Employee-Initiated Reduction in Time (ERIT) Program

To: UCSC Staff

From:  Lori Castro, Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor Staff Human Resources

The University is renewing the Employee-initiated Reduction In Time (ERIT) Program which allows policy covered career staff employees, except members of the Senior Management Group (SMG), to voluntarily reduce their working time and corresponding pay in order for the University to achieve temporary salary savings.  The program renewal is in effect July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2017.

Subject to departmental and supervisor approval, eligible employees may request to voluntarily reduce their working time and corresponding pay between 5% and 50% of full-time for a minimum of one to a maximum of 36 months between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2017.

In return for their voluntary reduction in time, participants will:

·      Accrue vacation and sick leave credits at their rate accrued prior to participation in ERIT;

·      Have their eligibility for health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision) not be affected by ERIT;

·      Have their UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) contributions based on their reduced salary, and UCRP service credit will accrue based on their reduced appointment;

·      Have other retirement benefits calculated based upon their pre-ERIT compensation rate as outlined within the proposed program guidelines.

CUE-Teamsters (CX) represented employees are also eligible to participate in ERIT.  For all other represented employees, participation in ERIT is subject to collective bargaining.

Program guidelines, ERIT Contract forms, and frequently asked questions are available online at:  Updated local procedures are forthcoming.
