In Memoriam: Glen Winans

To: UCSC Community

From: Art Ramirez, Dean of the Baskin School of Engineering

With great sadness, I write to convey Glen Winans' passing.  Glen served the Baskin School of Engineering under three deans and oversaw the growth of the school from its fledgling status to its present position of great influence on campus.  Glen's experienced hand guided the school through the worst financial crisis in UC history and we have emerged far stronger than before.  Glen had been, for me, a constant source of wisdom and knowledge of UC policy.  I will miss his sense of humor and comradery.  Indeed we have all lost someone special.

The family has written the below obituary and asked that we share this with the campus community:

Glen Titus Winans, 60, passed away on June 7, 2014 at his home in Watsonville, CA. He was born on August 8, 1953 in Northridge, CA to Malcom Culley Winans and Dorothy Winans Miller.

Glen grew up in Northridge, CA where he graduated from Cleveland High School in 1971. After high school he attended UCLA where he received a B.A. in Political Science with Honors in 1975. He then attended UC Irvine where he received a M.S. in Administration in 1977.  Following UC Irvine, he attended UCLA where he received a Ph.D. in Administrative and Policy Studies in Higher Education in 1986 (Dissertation Title: “Economic Determinants of Budget Allocations to Academic Departments: A Case Study”).  Glen held many senior management positions at public and private institutions during his 37-year career in higher education.  He worked for UC Santa Cruz for the past 10 years as Assistant Dean and Chief of Staff for the Baskin School of Engineering.

Glen married Patricia Ladron de Guevara in 2008 in Anaehoomalu Bay, HI. They were happily married for six years. Glen was passionate about education, mentoring and teaching students, and helping young people pursue their dreams. He was an ardent reader and well versed in a wide range of topics.  He also enjoyed traveling, especially to the Big Island, spending time with family, and rousing a smile in everyone around him.

Glen was preceded in death by his father Malcom Culley Winans and his brother Bradley Haines Winans.

Glen is survived by his spouse Patricia of Watsonville, CA; his son Russell, daughter in-law Kobi, and grandchild Maxwell of Simi Valley, CA; his son Mitchell of Washington, DC; his brother Kurt and sister in-law Cathy of Sparks, NV; and his mother Dorothy of Lake Tahoe, NV.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Glen Winans’ Memorial Scholarship Fund at http://www.gofundme.com/a4hu1g.
