Beware of identity theft happening to university employees

To:  UC Santa Cruz Community

From: UC Santa Cruz Police Department and Information Technology Services

The Police Department and Information Technology Services want to take this opportunity to warn you about a recent report from the FBI's Cyber Security Division about identity theft.

The FBI's Cyber Security Division has been alerted to a scam victimizing college and university employees. After the employees file their tax returns, they later learn tax returns were already filed using their social security numbers. The IRS sent their tax returns to the original fraudulent filers. Universities in four different states nationwide have reported this scam, with numerous victims at each university.

Please be aware that this is happening and universities are being targeted. If this happens to you, report it immediately to the UCSC Police Department at (831) 459-2231 AND to the FBI at www.ic3.gov.
