UAW calls off March 5 strike after campus and union reach agreement

We are very happy to inform you that the United Auto Workers, representing UCSC graduate student employees, has called off a strike it had announced for Wednesday, March 5.  Working with state mediators, the campus and UAW reached an agreement tonight on the resolution of two union grievances — prompting the union to rescind its call for a one-day strike.

Two state mediators who brought both sides together for non-stop talks today deserve our thanks and appreciation, as do representatives of the Labor Relations Office and the union, whose hard work ultimately led to this successful conclusion.

We also want to thank all of our students, staff, faculty, and other academic employees for the patience and flexibility shown during this recent period of labor uncertainty. That agreements have been reached at a systemwide level with AFSCME's service union and at a campus level with UAW — all in the past week — is good news indeed.
