Anticipated Strike on Wednesday, March 5

To: UCSC Community

From: George Blumenthal, Chancellor; Alison Galloway, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

As we write, campus and union representatives are continuing to meet with state mediators in an effort to avert the one-day strike that the United Auto Workers called for Wednesday, March 5. We regret to say that, as of 4 p.m. today, there is still a possibility that strike activities will take place on our campus, beginning tomorrow morning.

The most important thing that members of the campus community can do is to monitor developments before traveling to campus on Wednesday. A strike information page, accessible via the UCSC home page, will be updated — as information is known — tonight, early on Wednesday morning, and throughout the day tomorrow. Please check the web site regularly through Wednesday.

Strike activity very understandably creates extra strain for the many people — students, faculty, and staff — who live on campus. We will do our best to provide information and updates through our normal emergency channels:

• 459-INFO recorded phone line
• KZSC radio (88.1 FM)
• UCSC's Twitter and Facebook accounts
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
