It is a pleasure to announce that Jeff Shilling, associate vice chancellor of strategic philanthropy, has agreed to serve as vice chancellor of University Relations on an interim basis. Pending approval from UC President Janet Napolitano, this appointment will begin Nov. 1 and extend until we fill the position on a permanent basis.

Jeff has been a strong partner at a critical time, helping lead the campus to the recent successful public launch of our $300 million comprehensive fundraising campaign, The Campaign for UC Santa Cruz. Moreover, Jeff was instrumental in helping the campus raise $150 million during the "quiet phase" of the campaign, positioning us for continued success in the next few years.

I look forward to continuing to work with Jeff during this leadership transition. His familiarity with the campus and the division, combined with his development expertise, ensures that we won't miss a step, continuing to build on our success in fundraising, outreach, and advocacy.

Jeff joined UCSC three years ago from Stanford University, where he was chief development officer for the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation. He previously held positions in annual giving and major gifts at Stanford's Graduate School of Business. He also served as vice president for advancement at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose and as director of annual giving at Butler University.

As previously announced, Donna Murphy is stepping down after more than seven years of service to the campus. I am grateful to Donna for her energetic and passionate advocacy on behalf of the campus. The campus is in the midst of a nationwide search for her successor.
