Shakespeare Santa Cruz

To: UCSC Community

From: David Yager, Dean of the Arts

The campus has just posted a press release announcing that this will be the final season for Shakespeare Santa Cruz.

I wanted to make sure that each and every one of you was informed about this very difficult decision, which Chancellor Blumenthal, Executive Vice Chancellor Galloway, and I have regrettably reached due to the company's continuing financial challenges.

As someone who has devoted my life and career to advocating for the importance of the arts in the lives of people and communities, no decision has been harder to make. After years of working to reach a different outcome, the three of us have concluded that the company is not built on a financially sustainable model.

While SSC will continue through this year's holiday production, it's important now to begin to thank the many dedicated people who have helped Shakespeare Santa Cruz for 32 creative and inspiring years.

The list of people to acknowledge is too long to include here. But it certainly includes all of the incredibly talented artists, faculty, staff, volunteers, and of course, our long-term supporters who have contributed to the Shakespeare Santa Cruz legacy over the years.

To all of you whose work and generosity have supported Shakespeare Santa Cruz, thank you.
