A training exercise sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Police Department will be held the week of June 18-20, 2013, at the Porter Dormitory area. This training is designed to prepare our Police Department and local allied law enforcement agencies on how to respond to an Active Shooter incident, using the latest tactics and equipment available.
As such, the area around the Porter Dorm and the adjacent parking lot will be cordoned off by yellow tape and signs, and will be off-limits to anyone not participating in the training exercises. Entering and exiting from the parking lot will not be hindered. In addition, those near the area may hear sounds of screaming, simulated gun fire, and other noises as part of the training.
This training is expected to begin at about 8 a.m. and last throughout the day until 5 p.m., each day.
In addition to the Porter Dorm training exercises, on June 19, 2013, other Active Shooter training, will be held at the Early Childhood Center at Family Student Housing, from 8 a.m. to noon. The Center is closed this day, and there should be little to no disruption to the residents.
A test of the Cruz Alert system will be conducted, with messages sent to only those participating in this training exercise, several times throughout the week. This test will be conducted as part of the requirements set forth in the Clery Act. The tests will be clearly indicated, and participants may receive text messages, emails and possibly office or home phone messages.
Neither of these trainings is open to the public. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is imperative that these activities take place.
If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the UC Santa Cruz Police Department at 831-459-2231.
