Informational Notice: UC Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect

To:  UCSC Academic and Staff Employees

From: Pamela Peterson, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel; and Jo Packham, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Staff Human Resources

The UC Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (Policy) is being provided for a final informational notice to the University’s academic and staff employees.  This policy has been revised to include comments received during the formal systemwide review which concluded in February 2013.

This Policy was written to comply with California’s Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and related amendments that were effective January 1, 2013. CANRA requires employers, including the University, to identify Mandated Reporters.

These Mandated Reporters are required to:

• Report any observed or suspected child abuse or neglect to designated law enforcement or social services agencies, and

• As a condition of employment, sign a form acknowledging their status as a Mandatory Reporter and that they understand their reporting obligations.

The Policy, as well as mandated reporter categories, model acknowledgment forms and frequently asked questions are available online at:

The informational notice period ends on May 25, 2013; the final version of the UC Policy on Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect will become effective upon President Yudof’s signature.
