Graduate students in a wide range of disciplines from all five academic divisions at UC Santa Cruz will present their research on Friday, May 10, at the 9th annual Graduate Research Symposium.
This year's symposium will be held in the newly renovated McHenry Library, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., in the "Information Commons South" area on the second floor. An awards reception will begin at 3:30 p.m., with entertainment by the Terminal Degree Jazz Band and refreshments provided by the Global Village Cafe.
Tyrus Miller, vice provost and dean of graduate studies, said holding the event in McHenry Library will make it easy for undergraduate students to drop in and see the presentations. "Graduate students are modeling the way for many of our undergraduates, so it's great for undergrads to be exposed to the research that graduate students are doing on this campus," Miller said.
To accommodate various types of research and presentational formats, the symposium will include oral and multimedia presentations as well as posters. Many graduate students present their work at venues such as specialized conferences for researchers in a particular field. The Graduate Research Symposium encourages students to communicate their research in a way that is engaging and accessible to a more general audience. A panel of judges will award prizes for best presentations in each division, as well as best-of-symposium awards.
"It's a rare opportunity to see the incredible range of graduate student research on our campus," Miller said.
