The Global Nuclear Awareness Coalition (GNAC) will hold its first public meeting Thursday, May 23 at UC Santa Cruz.
The meeting, to hear about and discuss global and local nuclear issues, will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Cervantes and Velasquez Conference Room at the Bay Tree Conference Center on the UCSC campus.
The Global Nuclear Awareness Coalition (GNAC) was formed by a group of scholars at UCSC to better understand and communicate issues related to nuclear power, energy sovereignty, and indigenous knowledge. It plans to share information about research with the greater Santa Cruz community regarding the future of nuclear technologies.
UCSC sociology professor Hiroshi Fukurai will give a keynote presentation about the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the state and nuclear industrial complex. Fukurai was born in Sendai, Japan, which was struck by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami that lead to the meltdown and radiation release at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
