A weekend memorial will be held for Kevin Ebbert, a UCSC graduate, who was killed in action in Afghanistan late last month.

Ebbert, a Navy SEAL from Arcata, will be honored this Sunday, December 9, from noon to 2 p.m., at Humboldt State University.

The 32-year-old SEAL and corpsman was killed on November 24 while “supporting stability operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan,” according to a Department of Defense press release. The region is a mountainous area in the center of the country.

In an obituary in the Eureka Times-Standard, Ebbert is described as a person who had a passion for music and reading, while also enjoying backpacking, rafting, and Ultimate Frisbee.

He graduated from UCSC in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in music and a minor in jazz. Affiliated with Kresge College, Ebbert first enrolled on campus as a freshman in fall 1998.

"I was devastated to learn of this," said Anatole Leikin, a UCSC professor of music. "I remember Kevin from my music theory classes. He was a talented and hard-working student."

"On behalf of the UC Santa Cruz campus, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kevin's wife, to his mother, and to his other family members and friends," UCSC Chancellor George Blumenthal said. "We all are saddened by this news and are profoundly thankful for Kevin's service to our country."
