It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the passing of our colleague Hartzell Lemons, on Friday, August 31, after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his partner Bruce Occena.
The Music Department recognizes the scholarly work Hartzell pursued during his time in our doctoral program, which he started in 2008. He successfully completed the Ph.D. Qualifying Exam, for which he studied while undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Hartzell demonstrated great and inspiring fortitude in completing his coursework and research in the face of significant challenges. The Music Department is also grateful for Hartzell's early keyboards performances both on campus and in the community. His dedication and courage were truly inspirational. We will miss him.
There will be a memorial service for Hartzell at Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz on Tuesday, October 2 (Hartzell's birthday), at 2 p.m. This will be followed immediately by an informal reception.
