Grupo Folkórico Los Mejicas, the student-organized folklórico dance group at UC Santa Cruz, celebrates its 40th anniversary with a special spring festival.
Performances are Friday, June 8th from 7-10 p.m. and Saturday June 9th from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the UC Santa Cruz Mainstage Theater.
The group, comprised of more than 60 members, will present traditional dances from nine regions across Mexico. This year’s celebration is more than a presentation of culture; it is also a celebration of the group’s triumphs and struggles since its founding in 1972.
“The celebration of this year’s festival represents the 40 years in which people have invested so much time and effort in maintaining Latin American culture and heritage alive and visible on campus and in the community,” said Edgar Ontiveros, dancer and choreographer for the dances of Sonora Bronco.
One of Grupo Folkórico Los Mejicas's main goals is the presentation of Mexican culture through education and dance. The organization is open to people of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds, providing opportunities for all to explore and experience the rich culture of Mexico through its traditional folkloric dances.
This year’s theme "Mejicas, Hoy y Siempre – Mejicas, Now and Forever" represents the 40 years worth of Mejicas members who have contributed to the group's creation and establishment. It recognizes the contributions and dedication of those who are part of the group now as well as the passion and drive of those who will keep the group’s spirit alive and strong for future years to come.
