The full range of graduate student research at UC Santa Cruz will be on display at the University Center on Friday, May 11, during the 8th annual Graduate Research Symposium. The event takes place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and features student presentations in poster, oral, and multimedia formats.
"Graduate students from across the five divisions, from the arts and cultural disciplines to the sciences and engineering, will present their work," said Tyrus Miller, vice provost and dean of graduate studies. "It's a great opportunity to get to see the emerging research of this new generation of scholars, and the students themselves get the chance to speak to an audience broader than their immediate peers and professional community."
Many graduate students present their work at venues such as specialized conferences for researchers in a particular field. The Graduate Research Symposium encourages students to communicate their research in a way that is engaging and accessible to a more general audience, Miller said. "That's not an easy task, but it's a crucial skill for the subsequent professional careers of our graduate students, and they do a great job at it," he said.
A panel of judges will award prizes for best presentations in each division, as well as best-of-symposium awards. The Terminal Degree Jazz Band will provide entertainment on the veranda throughout the event.
