Faculty, staff, and alumni of UC Santa Cruz accounted for six of the 100 women recognized by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal as 2012 Women of Influence in Silicon Valley.

Claire Max, professor of astronomy and astrophysics, and Angela Wray, managing director of the University Affiliated Research Center at NASA Ames, were among those honored at an April 26 awards ceremony at the Fairmont in San Jose. Four UCSC alumni were also honored, including Shiloh Ballard, vice president of housing and community development for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group; Madison Nguyen, vice mayor of the City of San Jose; Julie Packard, executive director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium; and Jennifer Simmons, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley.

The Women of Influence are recognized as leaders in the finance, technology, health care, nonprofit, and education sectors. Honorees were nominated by their peers and selected for their leadership and contributions to their companies and communities. All 100 of these outstanding women were featured in the Women of Influence special publication in the April 6 issue of the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.
