From: Chancellor George Blumenthal

I am pleased to invite you to attend the 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation on Thursday, February 2, at 7:00 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church Street, Santa Cruz.

Our featured speaker and honored guest this year is Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Her talk is titled, "The Privilege of Serving: Art and the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr."

One of the most widely read American poets, Giovanni prides herself on being "a Black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English." She remains as committed to the cause and as determined as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality.

At this year's convocation, the fourth Tony Hill Award for Community Service will be given to an individual in the Santa Cruz community who demonstrates the hallmarks of the late Tony Hill's life: mentor, inspirational leader, gifted mediator, and bridge-builder in our community. The recipient of the award will receive a $500 cash contribution from UC Santa Cruz to be given to the nonprofit organization of his or her choice.

Bringing together UC Santa Cruz students, faculty, staff, and members of our wider community, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation celebrates the life and dream of the late civil rights leader by reaffirming the human ideals of freedom, justice, community, and opportunity.

The event is free of charge and open to the public; no advance ticketing is required. UCSC shuttles will be provided to students for transportation to the Civic Auditorium and return to campus after the event. To learn more about the convocation, visit ucsc.edu/mlk.

I hope you will join your colleagues and our community for this inspiring event in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
