UCSC aims for zero waste in student move-out
UCSC, for the past few years, has been holding “Zero-Waste Move Out” events across the campus, making it much easier for students to deposit household goods, electronics, toiletries, canned food and other materials in collection bins. It’s all part of UCSC’s efforts to make the campus zero waste in 2020.

In Memoriam: George Malloch
George Malloch Jr., who served as a trustee of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation from 1990 to 2002, died on May 21 in Germany. A resident of Brookdale in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mr. Malloch was president of the foundation from 1997-1999.

Chancellor receives honorary degree from alma mater
Chancellor Blumenthal was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM).

Sociology department chair Craig Reinarman’s research was cited in War on Drugs: The Report of the Global Commission on Drug Policy. The report called the war on drugs a failure and received worldwide attention when it was released last week.

Student parking during year-end activities
This week many parking lots on campus will be posted with signs welcoming visitors to commencements and other year-end celebrations.

Temporary closure of McHenry Library
McHenry Library will be closed June 10 through June 19, while we move collections, staff, and operations back into the wing of the library that has been undergoing a major renovation.

The Graduate Division has announced the names of the graduate students who have been selected as recipients of the 2010-11 Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

Outstanding work in the spotlight: Student Achievement Week recognizes accomplishment
Student Achievement Week closed with the highly anticipated 2011 Undergraduate Academic Achievement, Excellence in Teaching, and Mentoring Awards ceremony and reception. This year’s winner of the prestigious Steck Award is undergraduate astrophysics major Luke Kelley, 23.

Redwood conservation and rock and roll: Conferences keep campus busy in summer
Summer is conference season at UCSC where thousands of newcomers will cross scenic bridges, explore the woods, and take classes. UCSC expects 70 residential conference groups, and 10,000 visitors, from June 19 to August 27.
