Student Achievement Week: recognizing excellence

The annual UCSC Student Print sale is a highlight of Student Achievement Week. The annual event takes place at the Baskin Visual Arts Center, Room G-101, Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

UC Santa Cruz will honor a long list of outstanding scholars, visual artists, performers and researchers during the annual Student Achievement Week festivities from May 28 to June 3.

Many of these students labor outside the public eye, whether they are rehearsing a play or piece of music, drafting a paper, or completing an in-depth research project.

This week allows these students to present their work in highly public settings, from an annual print sale to a sciences and engineering poster symposium.

Every year, a large crowd attends the Undergraduate Academic Achievement and
Excellence in Teaching Awards, which will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., June 3,
at the Colleges Nine and Ten, Multipurpose Room.

One of the highlights is the Steck Family Award, which honors the best senior thesis completed during the academic year. The winner is chosen from the Chancellor's Award candidates. In keeping with UCSC tradition, the identity of the winner will remain a secret until the end of the ceremony.

Outstanding faculty will also receive recognition: The Excellence in Teaching Awards are given each spring to selected faculty who engage students through innovative course designs, special learning techniques and materials, and their own personal qualities as teachers and mentors.

The Physical & Biological Sciences Division has a highly public event of its own – the 14th Annual Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium, which recognizes and promotes the outstanding undergraduate research that is being carried out at UCSC while providing students with the experience of presenting their research results in a professional setting. It is sponsored by the Division of Physical & Biological Sciences and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering.  The free event will be held at the Jack Baskin Engineering Courtyard Thursday, June 2, 2:00-4:00 pm.

Art exhibits take place throughout Student Achievement Week. Recipients of the Irwin Scholarship will exhibit their work from May 25 to June 11 during the Irwin Scholars Exhibition at the Sesnon Gallery, Porter College. The opening reception will take place May 25, 5:00-7:00 pm.

Meanwhile, Open Studios: Spring 11, will bring visitors to the Baskin Visual Arts Studios/Digital Arts Research Center on Friday, June 3,  from 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Judging from the last few years, the  37th Annual UCSC Student Print Sale should be well-attended. The annual event takes place at the Baskin Visual Arts Center, Room G-101, Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. This is a chance to buy original fine-art prints in a variety of media: woodcut, lithography, etching, digital printmaking and handmade books, courtesy of the printmaking program and facilities at UCSC. Proceeds benefit the individual student artists.

Student actors/singers will perform a new play this year, as part of the Theater Arts Department’s roster of events. Orestes Terrorist, featuring a Greek Chorus of twenty, will be performed at the UCSC Mainstage Theater  Friday, May 20 through Sunday, May 29 7:00 p.m. (Thur-Sat), 3:00 pm (Sun).
