Before the UC Santa Cruz mock trial team went to the Northern California regional tournament in February, a poll on the mock trial web forum Perjuries.com asked the community to predict the teams that would move on to the next round.
The UCSC team mustered a handful of votes, but was summarily dismissed as a serious contender.
Not only did the entirely student-led team make it out of regionals, it then went on to place in the top six at the Opening Round Championship Series in Irvine in March, and grabbed UCSC a spot in the National Championships to be held April 15-17 in Des Moines, Iowa.
