Openings in UCSC Vanpools

There are currently openings in five different UC Santa Cruz vanpools: Aptos, Live Oak, San Lorenzo Valley, San Jose, and Campbell. Monthly fare for the three routes available in Santa Cruz County are $36, while the two open vanpools that travel over Highway 17 are $59/month. Those interested can try their vanpool of choice for a week with no obligation to continue.

The vanpool program (operated by Transportation and Parking Services) started 18 years ago, and has grown to serve over 230 people in 23 vanpools. In addition to reducing their transportation costs, carbon emissions, and traffic impacts, vanpool participants report that the program provides a unique opportunity to be part of a community. “I know that it’s more economical, but that’s not the only reason” said staff member Katie Savacool Taylor, a vanpooler since 2008. “Meeting and knowing people from other units is a great way to get a more balanced view of the university…. I love the sense of community and diversity within the van.” Katie Lindsay, member of a vanpool since 2004, also commented on the benefits of meeting people from different parts of the campus. “[V]anpooling is culturally stimulating, good for your health, and educational! Work is now something I do in between vanpool rides.”
