Environmental Studies postdoctoral researcher Winifred Frick's paper in the journal Science that predicts a regional extinction within 20 years of the little brown bat generated widespread publicity across the country and internationally. The New York Times  and Boston Globe  led a contingent of eastern papers and media outlets in writing about the study that affects bats in the northeast. Numerous popular science blogs covered the issue with original reporting; an Associated Press report was published in more than 150 newspapers and Web sites across the U.S. Frick also appeared on NPR's Science Friday and conducted several other radio interviews including with CBS News and KGO ABC in San Francisco.

Marine biologist Baldo Marinovic was quoted in a front-page San Francisco Chronicle story about the large number of whales feeding on krill in Monterey Bay this summer.

The web site of the public radio program Science Friday featured a time-lapse video produced by astronomer Tony Misch to document the construction of the dome for the new Automated Planet Finder telescope at Lick Observatory.

Politics Department chair Dan Wirls was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article on Abel Maldonado's campaign to remain lieutenant governor of California.

A story about biologist Kerstin Wasson and her efforts to restore the native oyster population in Elkhorn Slough ran in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News, andMonterey Herald. 

 

Astronomer Greg Laughlin was quoted in a New Scientist story about the search for Earth-like planets.

 

A surgical robot developed by computer engineer Jacob Rosen was featured in the August issue of Popular Science magazine.

Chris Darimont, a postdoctoral researcher in environmental studies, was quoted in a Globe and Mail article on encounters between wildlife and humans.

Santa Cruz Good Times ran a story about research on harmful algal blooms by ocean scientist Raphael Kudela.
