As the academic year comes to a close, we want to highlight various efforts on campus to promote a diverse and inclusive community.
New Initiatives
First, we are pleased to announce the 2010-11 Diversity & Inclusion Certificate Program. This eight-course program is primarily intended for staff employees who want to gain an in-depth understanding of the differences that exist in our community and who seek a greater understanding of how we can work together to build a stronger campus community. Core topics include:
. Overview of diversity, retention and inclusion at UCSC
. Disability
. Sexual orientation
. Race, ethnicity and national origin
. Generational differences and commonalities
. Diversity change agents
Courses will begin in fall 2010. Those who complete all eight courses within two years will receive a certificate of participation that will be presented at the Chancellor's Achievement Awards for Diversity celebration at the end of the academic year. The courses are free of charge to participants; costs are covered by the campus diversity officers and the EEO/AA Office. For more information and to sign up, please contact Joy Lei at (831) 459-1758 or jllei@ucsc.edu.
Second, UC President Mark Yudof has appointed a systemwide Advisory Council on Campus Climate, Culture, and Inclusion, and he has asked each campus to create a parallel council. At UCSC, our council will be responsible for the ongoing evaluation of campus climate conditions, practices, and policies and for generating proposals that will support the goals of inclusion and community. We are moving forward with establishing this council, which will be chaired by Chancellor George Blumenthal.
Recent Highlights
On June 3, Chancellor Blumenthal hosted the seventh annual Chancellor's Achievement Awards for Diversity ceremony. These awards showcase people and programs that have made outstanding contributions to furthering diversity, inclusion, and excellence at UCSC. The recipients of this year's awards are featured online. The event was cosponsored by the Chancellor's Office, Academic Personnel Office, Staff Human Resources, and EEO/AA.
On May 20, we were proud to cosponsor the seventh annual César Chávez Convocation with keynote speaker Maria Hinojosa, who discussed her career as a journalist, a recent visit to the White House, and the controversial new immigration law in Arizona.
On May 4, we cosponsored the first-ever Disability Resource Center Faculty/Staff Appreciation and Student Recognition Reception. Several members of the campus community who are working to make UCSC more accessible to students with disabilities were honored at the reception.
