The city of Santa Cruz will welcome the third stage of the Amgen Tour of California cycling race next Tuesday, May 18.
The largest event of its kind in the U.S., this fifth annual event will bring positive global exposure to Santa Cruz.
Over 120 competitive cyclists from 23 countries will ride down Empire Grade Tuesday afternoon, passing our west campus entrance before turning down Western Drive. Global race coverage on the Versus television network will provide international media coverage to UCSC. Campus representatives have been actively serving with other community organizations on the Amgen Tour event local host committee.
As a safety precaution, the west campus entrance will be closed to inbound and outbound vehicle traffic Tuesday between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.
During that period, inbound and outbound vehicle traffic will be re-routed to the main entrance. General campus updates and traffic advisories will be posted throughout the day at www.ucsc.edu and on the campus information line, 459-INFO.
There has also been a call for "teach-outs" and related activities at or near both campus entrances, beginning on May 18. It is my understanding that organizers and participants intend to conduct these activities without disrupting the work of other faculty, staff, and students. We are committed to ensuring that students, faculty, staff and community members have access to the campus throughout the day.
Due to the temporary, limited impact of the Amgen Tour event Tuesday afternoon, you may wish to build additional travel time into your Tuesday schedule. Department chairs, unit managers and supervisors are encouraged to consult with their deans or principal officers about possible adjustments to schedules or meeting locations on Tuesday.
