H1N1 and Seasonal Flu Shots Friday 1/22/10 at the East Gym

To: UCSC Students, Faculty, and Staff

From: Drew Malloy, MD, Medical Director, Student Health Center

We are pleased to announce that we have a sufficient supply of H1N1 and Seasonal influenza vaccine, which we will administer to registered students, faculty, and staff with a reservation. The cost for administration of the H1N1 vaccine is $15 and the cost for administration of the Seasonal Flu vaccine is $25.

Students may charge the fee to their student account or pay by check or cash. Anthem Blue Cross (USHIP and GSHIP) insurance plans will reimburse individuals for the cost of influenza vaccine administration as will many major insurance carriers. Faculty and Staff may pay for the vaccine by check or cash.

H1N1 new infections continue to be seen in Santa Cruz County and on campus. Seasonal influenza typically becomes more frequent at this time of year and the H1N1 vaccine does not provide protection against the seasonal strain. Both H1N1 and seasonal influenza infections can be serious and vaccination is the most effective prevention strategy. The Santa Cruz Health Department continues to encourage immunization to reduce risk of serious complications and lessen spread of the infection.
