Peyman Milanfar and John Vesecky, both professors of electrical engineering in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering at UCSC, have been named Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Elevation to the grade of fellow is a prestigious honor conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors on members with an extraordinary record of accomplishment. The total number of fellows selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting membership.
Milanfar was recognized "for contributions to inverse problems and super-resolution in imaging." He directs the Multidimensional Signal Processing Research Group, which has projects in areas such as computational vision and resolution enhancement of images and video. In 2005, he founded a company (MotionDSP) to bring his video enhancement technology to consumer and forensic markets.
Vesecky was honored "for contributions to marine remote sensing and technology." His research focuses on the use of high-frequency radar for observation of ocean surface winds, waves, and currents. This work has applications for understanding coastal and deep-water ocean processes. Vesecky served as founding chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering.
With origins dating back to 1884, the IEEE is the world's largest professional association. As IEEE Fellows, Milanfar and Vesecky join an elite cohort of around 6,000 engineers.
