Statement by UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal concerning Governor Schwarzenegger's proposal today to amend the state constitution to shift money from prisons to higher education:
"I am greatly encouraged by Governor Schwarzenegger's statement today in support of increased funding for higher education in California. His proposal to invest more in higher education than prisons reflects a return to the values that helped build California.
"The University of California has been a powerful economic engine of the state for decades, and we cannot afford to let that engine stall. The budget process in California is complex and significant challenges remain, but I welcome the Governor's strong endorsement of the value of higher education to the people of California."
