Winter Campus Curtailment 2009-2010

To: UCSC Academic and Staff Employees

From: Charlotte Moreno, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Staff Human Resources; Pamela Peterson, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel

Our 2009-2010 Winter Campus Curtailment is scheduled for the time period of December 19, 2009 through January 3, 2010.

. December 24, 25, 31 and January 1 are paid university holidays

. December 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 are not paid university holidays

These curtailment days may result in employees using vacation, accrued compensatory time off, or leave without pay for December 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30, 2009. Academic and staff employees participating in the furlough/salary reduction program are encouraged to use furlough days to cover these dates, but they may also use vacation, accrued compensatory time off, or leave without pay, as eligible. Furlough days may be taken in advance of accrual with supervisor approval.

Due to the diverse responsibilities of academic appointees and the flexibility in performing their obligations, it is anticipated that some academic appointees will continue working during campus closure.

Currently, all eligible academic employees as well as non-represented staff employees and those staff employees represented by the following collective bargaining units, Service Employees (SX), Patient Care Technical (EX), Skilled Crafts (K7) and Residual Health Care (HX) who will not have sufficient vacation accruals will be allowed to use up to six (6) vacation days in advance of actual accruals during the campus curtailment period.

For all other represented staff employees who may not have sufficient accumulated vacation, up to three (3) days of vacation leave may be used in advance of actual accruals during the campus curtailment period. Please refer to the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement for specific guidance.

Employees normally required to wait six (6) months before using accrued vacation will be allowed to use vacation even if the required waiting period has not been completed.

Units planning to maintain operations as usual during any time of the winter curtailment must receive approval from their respective Principal Officers. Please refer to the Exceptions to Campus Closure memo dated November 16, 2009. It is not necessary to notify SHR or APO of these exceptions.
