Update on UCSC Diversity Efforts

To: UCSC Faculty, Academic Employees, and Staff

From: Co-Campus Diversity Officers Alison Galloway and Ashish Sahni

Effective July 1, 2009, Chancellor Blumenthal appointed Vice Provost Alison Galloway as campus diversity officer for faculty and Assistant Chancellor Ashish Sahni as campus diversity officer for staff and students. In our new roles, we are co-chairs of a newly established campus Diversity Advisory Committee that includes broad campus representation.

In June 2009, our campus submitted a report to the Office of the President for inclusion in a regental diversity accountability report and framework. As part of that effort, our campus is required to establish and report on annual diversity goals. This Diversity Accountability Framework will drive all that we will do on campus.

Despite the budget situation, we have exciting initiatives and programs planned for the academic year, using available resources and a small investment directed toward critical program areas. For example, we will develop a Diversity Certificate Series that will be available for faculty and staff.

In addition, numerous programs already exist that demonstrate our commitment to diversity, such as the Chancellor's Achievement Awards for Diversity, the Leadership Academy, and the newly released Fair Hiring Online Training. We will continue to keep you apprised of these and other efforts as they unfold.

In order to best serve the campus, we want to outline the areas of responsibility of staff working under Assistant Chancellor Sahni's and Vice Provost Galloway's supervision in their diversity, inclusion, and EEO/AA compliance-related efforts. Please feel free to contact the following staff directly for matters related to their areas of responsibility.
