"Full Disclosure"--an exhibition opening on October 7 at UCSC's Sesnon Gallery-is built upon the idea of "failure" as a path to learning.
The show is an intimate look at the process of trial and error that lies behind the complex work of artists and scientists.
Co-curated by associate professor of art Melissa Gwyn and associate professor of chemistry Scott Lokey, it features collaborative projects by UCSC arts and science faculty and lab researchers.
A mix of both art and artifacts, the exhibition includes painting, photography, sculpture, models, photography, microscopic images, installation and computer animation.
Gwyn noted that signage will be presented alongside the art that explains "the research behind the science, and the ideas behind the art."
The projects in the exhibition are all the result of creative exchange, shared ideas and materials, and cooperative working methods between artists and scientists.
"This is a collaboration between science and art faculty that considers the role of failure as a generative process," said Gwyn. A failed project can often lead to a number of digressions that accumulate to become something else."
"It is the aim of this exhibition to examine failure as an integral process for creative and scientific inquiry," Gwyn added.

Full Disclosure runs from October 7 through November 21 at UCSC's Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery. An opening reception will take place on October 7, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion with faculty artists and scientists. Admission is free and open to the public.
