San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom made an appearance on campus Tuesday, drawing a crowd of approximately 300 students and others to the College 10 Multipurpose Room at lunchtime.

The mayor--sartorially smart in a navy suit and open collar--spoke in opposition of statewide ballot initiatives Propositions 4 and 8, and urged young people to vote in the November 4 election.

"This is certainly the most important election of my lifetime, and possibly of your lifetime," said Newsom, who in 2004 gained national attention when he issued a directive to the San Francisco city-county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Newsom was introduced by Santa Cruz Mayor Ryan Coonerty, who presented him with a key to the city.
